The 1998 June Draft was Tampa Bay's first as a full participant at the Major League level. However, they had to wait for quite some time before even making their first pick: they lost their selections in each of the first three rounds due to signing three Type-A Free Agents in the prior offseason. Their first- and second-round selections went to San Francisco as compensation for pitchers Roberto Hernandez and Wilson Alvarez, their third-round selection went to the Chicago White Sox as compensation for outfielder Dave Martinez.
