- Tampa Bay named Lou Piniella as their new Major League manager.[1]
- Outfielder Randy Winn was traded to Seattle in exchange for minor league infielder Antonio Perez, part of a compensation package the Mariners received for allowing Piniella out of his contract early.[1]
