- The Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Arizona Diamondbacks participated in the Expansion Draft, choosing a total of 35 players each from among the 28 other clubs to fill out their 40-man rosters in advance of their first Major League seasons in 1998.[1]
- Catcher John Flaherty was acquired from San Diego in exchange for infielder Andy Sheets and infielder Brian Boehringer.[1]
- Infielder Fred McGriff was acquired from Atlanta in exchange for a PTBN.[1]
- Infielder Kevin Stocker was acquired from Philadelphia in exchange for outfielder Bobby Abreu.[1]
- Pitcher Roberto Hernandez was signed as a free agent.[1]
