- The Tampa Bay Devil Rays participated in their first minor league spring training game against a Philadelphia Phillies squad, winning 6-0 behind a combination no-hitter thrown by pitchers Joahn Kaufman, Tom Bergan, Matt Williams, and Jamie Ybarra.[1]
1998
- Pitcher Vaughn Eshelman was placed on the 60-day disabled list.[2]
- Pitchers Mike Duvall, Jose Luis Garcia, Jason Johnson, Brad Pennington, and Matt Ruebel, outfielders Brooks Kieschnick, Kerry Robinson, Luke Wilcox, and Randy Winn, infielders Steve Cox, Chris Martin, and Francisco Matos, and catcher Scott Stricklin were assigned to minor league camp.[2]
