1997
- Spring Training:
- Advanced-A: St. Petersburg (10-4) won, 10-4, over Tampa (New York (AL))
- Class-A: Charleston (8-7) lost, 8-3, to Peoria (St. Louis)
- The Devil Rays made the first minor league trade in franchise history by acquiring pitcher Terry Harvey from the Cleveland Indians organization in exchange for a PTBN.[1]
- Later the same day, they purchased catcher Cesar Devarez's contract from Baltimore.[2]
- Infielder Ryan Arevalos was released.[1]
- Catcher Sam Voita and outfielder Doug Carroll were assigned to Advanced-A St. Petersburg.[1]
- Travis Whitson and outfielder Tom McKinnon were assigned to Class-A Charleston.[1]
- Pitcher Mike Kimbrell and outfielder Matt Kastelic were reassigned to extended spring training.[1]
