1997
- The Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Arizona Diamondbacks participated in the Expansion Draft, choosing a total of 35 players each from among the 28 other clubs to fill out their 40-man rosters in advance of their first Major League seasons in 1998.[1]
- Catcher John Flaherty was acquired from San Diego in exchange for infielder Andy Sheets and infielder Brian Boehringer.[1]
- Infielder Fred McGriff was acquired from Atlanta in exchange for a PTBN.[1]
- Infielder Kevin Stocker was acquired from Philadelphia in exchange for outfielder Bobby Abreu.[1]
- Pitcher Roberto Hernandez was signed as a free agent.[1]
- First base coach Billy Hatcher, third base coach Greg Riddoch, pitching coach Rick Williams, bench coach Frank Howard, and hitting coach Steve Henderson were named to Tampa Bay's inaugural Major League coaching staff.[2]
